A Very Cute Book
What a nice book! I read this book to my six year old son, and he really enjoyed it. The story and the pictures were adorable. It's about a little boy who loves cars and trucks. His neighbor makes him a board of their neighborhood to drive his little cars on. Albert tells the neighbor that he really wishes he could drive on the board himself. The neighbor makes Albert a car of his very own to drive. Albert goes on a little adventure in the car, and finds that he is on the board that the neighbor made him! When he comes back, he doesn't know if he really drove around on the board, or it was just his imagination. I think this point was completely lost on my son, that is the only reason I am giving it 4 stars. I understood it, but I don't think littles ones would.

My son loves this book
We've had this book for a few months now. My 5 year old son Jake can't get enough of it-- he's crazy about the little red car. His 4 year old cousin Emily likes it too. Nice story, great pictures.

Kid's favorite!
We have two boys that adore this book. We have to read it every night of the week! Even our ten year old still likes it. The fantasy of driving a car when you are a small child is right on target in this book. Mr. Appleby adds the excitement of magic, the drive through the opening in the bushes adds a sense of wonder, and the illustrations are bright and alive. The artwork matches the story perfectly. Every young child can identify themselves in this book, which is why our kids, and all of their friends enjoy this book over and over. This book also appeared briefly in the movie "Enough", starring Jennifer Lopez, which our oldest son spotted and was proud to have owned a "movie book".

A great read!
I enjoyed reading this book. It kept me entertained throughout the novel. It was very suspenseful and mysterious. I was very excited to find out how the mystery unfolds and the relationship between Douglas and Shawna kept me riveted.

Very Exciting
This book keeps you entertained until the very end. Shawna and David are fun and exciting characters. A little bit of mystery that keeps you guessing...can't wait to read another Shannon Drake.

WOW.....WHAT A GREAT BOOK!!
WOW, this was a great book. I could not put it down. This is a wonderful series, a must read! These were the first set of books I have read by her and I will for sure keep on reading them. Not only were they romance books, but lost of mystery that was completely captivating!

Shannon: Lost and Found (Girlhood Journeys , No 2)

Lost and Found
The book I read Lost and Found was an o.k. book. It was a little kiddish, slow and had not much action. Other than that it was a pretty good book.

the best part of the book is when the girl Shannon takes her monkey named "kitty" with her to different places. The worst part its just a little slow for me. I would definitely recommend the book for someone a little younger. I really like how when I read it and it did not fill like it was fake. It felt really like a true story.

This books author did a really good job describing the setting and the theme. She went into a lot of debth on the setting like the big, old, magnificent, green trees. thats only about the trees it got better. The theme I thought was really good. The theme was "Treat Others The Way You Would Want To Be Treated". Thats my favorite theme. I thought the author did really good job.

Exiting!
Lost and Found was cool! Shannon, he freinds Betsy and Mi Ling are collecting books for the new San Fransisco public library. Then, some of ythe books are stolen! what are they to do?

Great book!
Shannon was my favorite girl out of all the Girlhood Journeys series. I liked how she was Irish (that was cool!) and that tied in with the story. It was hard for the Irish to get jobs then ("No Irish Need Apply"). In this one she donates books to the first public library in San Francisco. It was great!

Hope and Heroes: Portraits of Integrity

To The Remainder Table!
I'm fascinated with the phenomenon of celebrity and how we turn these people into figures of worship so, naturally, I was curious about this book. First of all, there are some pretty interesting books out there about "heroes" classical and contemporary -- this isn't one of them. I think the fact the creators used Uri Geller to try and lend authority to this mess of a book (almost as impressive as if they'd gotten Sally Struthers to hawk the book) says quite a lot! The photos are as interesting as anything you might find in a newspaper or mainstream mag (i.e., not especially inspired or aesthetically/technically sophisticated). The writing that accompanies the photos is sophomoric. Ergo, anybody can get a book published if it's got celebrities in it. Save your money for a good book of photography... Mary Ellen Mark, Avedon, etc. Otherwise just go buy a USA today... you'll find the same PR style pap and conventional photography.

Truly inspiring lives - highly recomended
This book is a perfect remedy for the onslaught of negative news we live with every day. It gives readers countless examples of lives well lived, including almost every age group, from senior citizens to high school students. I had been expecting more celebrities, but was really surprised by how many of these people were just ordinary citizens, making a difference on local or international levels. I was also impressed by the sheer range of these activities - we always seem to think that it's only the Mother Theresa's of the world who save the world. Barry Shainbaum boldly illustrates that everyday folk, of any age, color, or race, have daily opportunities to change our world. I was so inspired by these stories, I kept picking up the book again and again when I felt overwhelmed by life...in fact, I ended up buying copies for family and close friends, so that they could revisit it any time that they felt the same.

We Need More Hope & More Heroes
I have grown more and more concerned over the years that our children are growing up without true heroes. If you ask a child who their heroes are, they are very likely to be athletes, singers, movie stars or celebrities in one field or another. Most of our children do not even realize that these people are icons, NOT heroes.
If asked why they admire these individuals, a child's response will usually be based on the amount of money the person earns, their appearance, their athletic ability, and so on. NONE of these qualities make an individual a hero.
In Barry Shainbaum's book, HOPE AND HEROES: Portraits of Integrity, we are given glimpses of real people, even though some are in the entertainment business or well known celebrities, who help define the true meaning of hero. Their lives represent deeds, accomplishments, organizations, beliefs that serve others in unselfish ways for the greater good rather than for the financial prosperity or career advancement of the individual.
After the tragedy of the World Trade Centers on September 11, 2001 many of our children got their first media introduction to heroism through the firefighters, police officers, airplane passengers, and other ordinary citizens who risked themselves for the sake of others.
Although the text in this book would be more appropriate for junior high school students and above, even younger children can appreciate the images of people throughout this book who have been photographed in interesting and compelling ways.
In my opinion, this book is an excellent source for looking at heroes, values, stories of hope and success, as well as a source for redefining what makes a hero.
Mr. Shainbaum's book should be part of every library collection in every school across the country as well as in every public and private library.

The Rain Came Down
Published in Hardcover by Blue Sky Press (October, 2000)
Author: David Shannon
Average review score:

Shannon' art a delight
The energy and excitement in Shannon's art brings a simple thunderstorm day to life. A very different book than his No, David! Series with one exception-the wit of the illustrations and the rendering of true emotions of anger, surprise, elation and affection. The words are straightforward, the colors bright, primary and active. As usual, Shannon's rendering of eyes and mouths, our two most expressive features, delight and amaze. Highly recommended for reading to small groups who can gather around and participate in the color, art and emotions of the characters. (Preschool, certainly, but for older readers to capture emotion in art).

When it rains, it pours!
To start a book review by raving about the beautiful art is unusual, but the illustrations in this book are fantastic. My kids were captivated by the pictures and wanted to know who would be affected by the rain next. The kids are 3 and 2 and I was amazed that even the 2 year old waited for the page to be turned and never left my lap. I was very impressed by the book and thankfully, so were the kids!

Wonderful!
The Rain Came Down...which made the chickens squawk, then the cat yowled and the dog barked. A man yelled at the dog and woke his sleeping baby. His wife heard the baby crying and shouted to her husband to "stop all that yelling". A policeman hearing the yelling, stops his car in the middle of the street to investigate which causes a cab driver to start honking, which makes the ice-cream man turn up the music in his truck. A painter accidently hits a barber with a falling paint can, a baker pokes the pizza man with his umbrella, a boy chasing his toy boat down a streaming gutter, splashes a little girl and there's arguing, crying, honking and yelling up and down the street.....Until the rain suddenly stops and so does the noise. The sun comes out, the air smells fresh and clean and a rainbow appears. Slowly, everyone calms down and helps each other straighten out the mess and get back to what they were doing before the shower. David Shannon's book about the chaos that occurs because of an unexpected rain storm is a wonderful chain of events story that will delight and amuse youngsters of all ages. His vibrant and very expressive illustrations become busier and more detailed with each addition to the unfortunate happenings this storm causes, until they almost spill off the page. This is a terrific picture book that will have your youngsters entranced and giggling every time it's read!

Superguides: Gymnastics
Published in Hardcover by Dorling Kindersley Publishing (01 February, 2000)
Authors: Joan Jackman and Shannon Miller
Average review score:

Kinda short...
A very attractive book, but covers only a few moves. (Forward/backward rolls, cartwheels, round-offs, back walk-overs, back handsprings, and handstands.) Not really useful for a girl wanting practical tips. Other apparatus (bars/beam/vault) are barely touched on.

Pretty Good
I think this is a nice book about gymnastics, but like one reviewer said, it's a little too short. It starts off with a forward by Shannon Miller, a history of gymnastics, what to wear to class, and shows a typical gym. The section with the skills was pretty good, but there weren't many in here. The instructions were nice and detailed, though, and I liked the rythmic gymnastics and sports acrobatics part. It's great for people who want to learn about the sport or beginning gymnasts.

A Really Good Book for Beginning Gymnasts
This is one of the best books on gymnastics I have read. It has pictures that show people how to do the move, and it starts with really simple tricks and moves on to the most difficult trick in the book- a backhandspring. It also has parts on sports acrobatics and rythmic gymnastics. It's a great book, but I would recommend it to beginning gymnasts.

Why It's Great to Be a Girl: 50 Eye-Opening Things You Can Tell Your Daughter to Increase Her Pride in Being Female

Aren't there any similar books for boys ???
I liked this book, but the only problem is... I'm a boy ! Unfortunately the title might also be: Why It Sucks to Be a Boy : 50 Eye-Opening Things You Can Tell Your Son to Make Him Fell Bad About Being Male

A great book!
This is a great book which has a little bit of women's history (Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, etc.) and many biological facts to celebrate the abilities and achievements of girls and women! Each of the 50 facts is on a single small page for easy reading. Especially good for middle school age girls. Very interesting review by the boy reader! It's clear that in our society boys are taught to think that if they aren't the best at everything, they "suck." Very sad, especially since there is no male-bashing in this book.

A favorite gift for girls of all ages!!
Becoming a woman in a man's world isn't easy - there's tons of heros and stories about boys and men and not as many stories about girls. Everyone knows boys are stronger than girls, or are they? This book is a fun and empowering perspective on Why Its Great to be a Girl! Boys, fear not! The book isn't down on men, its up on women!!

Arco Teach Yourself to Pass the Postal Service Exams in 24 Hours (Arco Teach Yourself Civil Service Tests in 24 Hours)

Authors: Ellen Lichtenstein and Shannon R. Turlington
Average review score:

this one will get you through
comprehensive, informative and very practical with good learning tips

Very Helpful
I liked the numerous practice exams. Also gave some really helpful ideas on how to memorize addresses and address checking. This is the only book you'll need.

This was the best book out of three for comprehensiveness.
This book provided the most useful methods of preparing for each portion of Battery Exam 470. There was adequate summary of learning techniques, very useful tips and most importantly sufficient practice sections, exams to best prepare by doing questions. Although not as many address checking and memory address sections as Bautista's book, I would recommend this one book of the three I purchased.

Tales from the Dugout : The Greatest True Baseball Stories Ever Told
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (11 January, 1998)
Author: Mike Shannon
Average review score:

Quite entertaining

This is a kind of book that you would love to take with you for a short trip to the bathroom. Really, I do not mean to be insulting, but the truth is that each story is so short but crisp, and often pretty funny that it makes perfect light reading.

I especially like that Shannon tells stories of not only superstars, but also of players with true character. But I think the title is a bid overblown. Read a story about your favorite player and see if you like the rest. I enjoyed reading the stories for players that I do not even know.

Pretty good
I went to the bookstore looking for a good, humorous baseball book with all true stories. Guess what? I found the right book. Tales from the Dugout was a great book, there are tons of great short little stories that you could tell others about. One that is stuck in my head is the story about the fight between the Philly Phanatic and Tommy Lasorda, I thought that was pretty amusing. I think its a great book for 14 years and up, I plan on buying Tales from the Outfield, his second book anytime soon.......

Baseball book delivers as promised
When I picked this book up in the bookstore, I was looking for some light reading and humorous anecdotes from the world of baseball, and that's what it looked like this book would be. Guess what? It is. Perfect to read between innings, before bed, or on the ceramic throne. Had a lot of fun reading the stories aloud to my honey, who is also a baseball fan. If you want something grittier or more in-depth, read the classic "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton. If you just want to enjoy yourself, or give a fun gift to a baseball fan, this is great.

P.S. Go Yanks!

A Much Compromised Lady (Zebra Regency Romance)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Zebra Books (Mass Market) (February, 2002)
Author: Shannon Donnelly
Average review score:

Historical romance mistakenly published as a Regency
Some rakes may be redeemable, but the hero of this story is WAY too far gone. In the author's previous book, "A Dangerous Compromise," he was the villain who was prevented from forcing the heroine's compliance by drugging her with opium when the hero arrived in a timely manner.

Ms. Donnelly, what WERE you thinking???

Another problem is the fact that the hero and heroine live together for a year before marrying. Oh, I'm sure that real lords occasionally married their mistresses during the Regency period, but not without a great deal of scandal. A "happy-ever-after" ending in this situation seems rather doubtful.

Frankly, this sort of plot line is not appropriate for a Regency; Ms. Donnelly should try writing full-length historicals if this is what she wants to do.

Should have ended sooner
If you do not like endings which are out of character for the regency period, then this book is not for you. I have gotten rid of my copy of it for this reason.

The Cost of Respectability
Beautiful Glynis and her brother, Christopher, have spent their whole lives on the road as care-free gypsies. But then their mother tells them the startling truth...their father was a lord whose inheritance was stolen from him by his younger brother. Their mother even believes that their uncle is responsible for their father's mysterious death. And thus Glynis and Christopher embark on a dangerous mission to learn the full truth of their shadowed past and gain their rightful inheritance.

Their first attempt to steal the documents that prove their mother was indeed married to their father fails miserably, but throws Glynis into the path of the notorious Lord St. Albans. He is unable to forget her and determines to help the siblings on their quest...for reasons of his own.

And so a story of intrigue and danger begins with few to be trusted and the stakes almost too high. But Glynis finds the greatest danger is her own growing feelings for the heartless rogue, St. Albans. Glynis is posing as his mistress in order to move in the same circles as her uncle...and St. Albans would like to make the arrangement real. Glynis should be outraged, but instead she more tempted than she thought possible. Could the price for her brother's respectability be her own?

And just so you know, Proper Conduct by Shannon Donnelly contains the love stories of both Christopher and Bryn.
